Meet the Team


Paul Meeusen


Paul Meeusen

Paul commenced his career with a specialist provider of treasury, cash management and financial planning software, following which he was a Director in the Financial Advisory practice of PwC.

He moved to Swiss Re in 2000 where he was CFO of Risk Solutions, followed by senior roles across three continents in Finance, Operations, Risk Management and more recently, heading up the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) team. Paul designed the first Blockchain use case for retrocession insurance in 2016 and subsequently co-developed the original business case and model for B3i when it was incepted in 2016.

Paul has also published multiple articles on performance management, internal controls and DLT and is a frequent speaker on these topics.

He holds a Masters in Business Economics from Leuven University (Belgium) and is a Certified Internal Auditor.

John Carolin


John Carolin

John is a seasoned Finance professional with diverse sector experience including financial services, media and technology.

John holds a Masters degree in Finance from the University of Cape Town. He is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst and previously worked at PwC where he gained extensive experience in the insurance industry. He later took up a director role within Finance at Swiss Re Life Capital. 

John also founded a number of businesses including an innovation incubator and a retail property asset management company. Prior to joining B3i, in 2013 he co-founded a B2B online marketplace for traditional advertising in South Africa


Ken Marke


Ken Marke

Ken has extensive international experience in the insurance industry, across the areas of operational, corporate development and strategic management. He has worked in several markets including the UK, Europe and the Far East.

Ken was previously Director for Strategy and Business Development at Ageas Group and Head of Strategic Futures at Ageas UK, Head of Strategy at Direct Line and Corporate Planning Director at Eagle Star Asia.

With a strong leaning towards future thinking and strategies for disruption, Ken constantly strives for change and challenging the status quo. After initiating the process for Ageas to join B3i in late 2016, Ken became the communications workstream lead for the consortium and since incorporation has been supporting B3i through the leadership of its marketing and communications strategy.

Ken holds a Degree in Business Studies and Administration from University of Northampton (UK) and is a UK Chartered Insurer.

Markus Tradt


Markus Tradt

Markus joined Munich Re in 2004 and has worked in the areas of ERP development (SAP) and IT Architecture. In previous roles, he has been responsible for IT architecture, system integration, asset management, accounting, regulatory reporting and underwriting systems and has experience in the designing, building and running of global enterprise IT systems.

Previously responsible for the global Blockchain initiative at Munich Re he has been active in the Blockchain community since 2015.
Markus has been leading the IT development work in B3i since its inception, heading up the development team and defining B3i’s Blockchain architecture and strategy.

Markus graduated from Munich School of Philosophy S.J. (Germany) and holds a Masters in Philosophy.

Phil Proost


Phil Proost

Philip is an experienced executive leader within the insurance industry  with a proven track record for developing business strategy, leading key international business transformations, scaling operations, digitisation and driving operational excellence.

Over the past three years before joining B3i he has supported a number of early-stage InsurTech start- ups which focused on behavioural underwriting  and digitisation of the end to end value chain.

Philip has held senior operational and technical positions across finance Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial and Technology. His previously held positions include; Group CIO and Group Head of Strategic Sourcing and Shared Services at XL Catlin and Head of Insurance Accounting at Equitas Reinsurance (now part of Berkshire Hathaway Group) and most recently interim CPO and COO at Azur Underwriting

He holds a Degree in Geography from Durham University (UK), ICAEW Chartered Accountant (ACA)

Sylvain de Crom


Sylvain De Crom

Sylvain started his professional career in investment banking and was most recently responsible for the research and development efforts of Aegon Blue Square Re, Aegon’s in-house reinsurer.

He joined B3i during its infancy as a consortium and was instrumental in designing and executing the initial B3i Cat XOL prototype. The successful release of the prototype led to the incorporation of B3i. Sylvain is now responsible for the functional and product area and leads the longer-term development of products for the company.

As former head of Business Development, Sylvain has solid experience in structuring and executing material financial transactions and seeks to push the boundaries. For example, he co-structured and executed the world’s first synthetic longevity transaction with the financial markets.

Sylvain has published numerous articles on longevity, Blockchain and underwriting risk solutions and is a frequent speaker on these topics and related innovation. He has completed extensive research on longevity risk and geo-concentration risk and was one of the pioneers of stochastic longevity modelling and structured the first capital market longevity risk hedge.

He holds a Masters in Physics and Astronomy from Utrecht University in The Netherlands, with a focus on computational and statistical physics and has a keen interest in technology.
