How we rank professional services firms
Our rankings are produced through independent research. No firm pays for placement, no firm buys a higher position, and no firm is included simply because they asked to be.
The b3i 6-Point Assessment
Every firm we rank is assessed against the same six points — verified, consistent, and never for sale.
1.Verified credentials
We confirm every firm's professional standing against the relevant regulator — the FCA Register, the SRA and Law Society, ICAEW and ACCA — and cross-check trading status and filing history at Companies House. A firm cannot appear in a ranking without verifiable, current credentials.
2.Specialism & expertise
We assess how deep and relevant a firm's expertise is for the work clients in the area actually need, rather than rewarding generalists with the longest service list. Genuine sector depth counts for more than breadth.
3.Track record
We look at how long a firm has operated, its stability through ownership, merger and team changes, and the evidence of real client outcomes over time — not just how it presents today.
4.Client reputation
We weigh independent review signals, professional references, and our own community ratings. We never rely on a firm's self-description, and reputation is assessed across multiple sources rather than a single platform.
5.Service & access
We consider how accessible senior people are, how responsive the firm is to new and existing clients, and whether the breadth of service genuinely matches what local clients need.
6.Transparency
We favour firms that are open about fees, engagement terms and complaints handling. No firm can pay for a position or buy a higher rank, and every ranking is produced editorially.
Every firm in every ranking is assessed against these six points. The category-specific criteria below show how each point is applied for a given profession — but the underlying standard is the same across accountants, solicitors, advisers and agencies alike.
The ranking process
- 01
Identify active firms
We identify professional services firms operating in each location through a combination of professional body directories (FCA Register, Law Society, ICAEW, ACCA), Companies House, local business directories, and our own research.
- 02
Apply the b3i 6-Point Assessment
Every firm is scored against the b3i 6-Point Assessment — verified credentials, specialism, track record, reputation, service and transparency. Each point is then applied through category-specific criteria published on every ranking page: accountants on ICAEW/ACCA accreditation and partner accessibility; marketing agencies on strategic capability and measurable ROI.
- 03
Research each firm independently
We research each firm's published credentials, professional registrations, client reviews, sector specialisms, team quality, and market reputation. We do not rely solely on information submitted by the firms themselves.
- 04
Score and rank
Firms are scored against the published criteria for their category. Rankings are assigned based on total score — not alphabetical order, not seniority, and not commercial relationships. We apply consistent scoring across all firms in the same category.
- 05
Review and update
Rankings are reviewed regularly to reflect firm changes, new market entrants, and updated research. We welcome corrections from firms and third parties and review all flagged inaccuracies promptly.
What we don't do
- ✕Accept payment for ranking positions or featured placements
- ✕Include firms simply because they asked to be listed
- ✕Allow firms to write or approve their own descriptions
- ✕Remove firms from rankings because they complained about their position
- ✕Adjust rankings based on advertising spend or commercial relationships
- ✕Guarantee inclusion to any firm regardless of their credentials

The two ratings we show
Each firm carries two distinct star ratings, and they measure different things:
Customer rating
An aggregate of customer feedback drawn from publicly available Google reviews and verified reviews left by registered b3i members. The review count shown reflects the underlying number of customer reviews. Member reviews are moderated before they appear and rate-limited to prevent manipulation; we never write or edit a firm's reviews, and a firm cannot pay to change its customer rating.
b3i editorial rating
Our own assessment, by Lead Editor Marcus Whitfield, scored against the b3i 6-Point Assessment. It reflects where a firm sits in our independent ranking, so it moves with editorial position rather than customer volume. It is a published editorial opinion, separate from customer reviews.
Customer ratings do not influence editorial ranking positions. Where member reviews are collected, IP addresses are hashed before storage and never retained in plain form.
Is your firm missing from our rankings?
